I love Heather Killough-Walden's "The Kings" book series and her new book "The Shifter King" is an auto-buy for me. I immediately read the book and even finished it in one sitting. I was happy to see that the some of my favorite characters made an appearance in the book such as the Vampire King and his wife, as well as Jason. However, I was a little disappointed with the flow of Jack and Sam's story. Similar to some of the recent installments of this book series, I felt that the two protagonists were not given ample time to get to know each other and develop their romance... or ... the readers were not given the chance to savor that part of the story.
Yes, it was indicated that Jack and Sam had this unexplainable connection that started 20 years back. But I didn't get to empathize with how their relationship bloomed in the present time. I was also surprised at how easy Sam fell into bed with Jack, so to speak, despite her earlier distrust of the said Shifter King. I guess I was looking for more romantic moments between the two before they culminated their relationship and established their blood bond.
Lastly, I was a bit confused and irritated on how the earlier chapters of this book were edited - if it was edited at all.
There were inconsistencies on how the characters names were written. Let's say for Jack, his full name is Jack Colton but there were several instances that his full name was re-stated, or the first name was used then it suddenly got switched to his last name. It's so distracting since the said errors happened in the non-dialogue parts of the book!
I even had to backtrack several pages just to check if Colton was the same as Jack since the introduction and prologue, as well as several portions of chapter three referred to him as Colton but in chapter two and the remaining part of the book he was called Jack. I know this may just be me and my personal preference but it was disappointing to see such editing errors.
Despite all these, I'm still happy to read "The Shifter King" and learning more about the Entity and his plans. Looking forward to the final two installments of this book series.

worth the wait....love it.....have read it twice now...Heather never fails...few editing things issues but never takes away from the story. Talk about patience being a virtue....This is the 10th book in this series of 13! And still feels like the beginning. We hear from a few of our other loved Kings and their awesome Queens. Heather keeps us informed on past Kings and Queens, while presenting the newest royalty. This story revolves around Jack and Samantha, 2 people who each possess powerful magic and an equally powerful pull towards each other. Heather tells their story with passion, as she continues to tell of the ongoing struggle between the kings and queens and the entity. Heather has yet to disappoint. I highly recommend it.
I can’t believe this is the 10th book in this series of 13! “The Shifter King” is as fresh as the 1st book, “The Vampire King.” As always, Heather keeps us informed on past Kings and Queens, while presenting the newest royalty. This story revolves around Jack and Samantha, 2 people who each possess powerful magic and an equally powerful pull towards each other. Half the fun of the story is finding out why. Heather delivers their story with gusto, as she continues to tell of the ongoing struggle between the kings and queens and the entity. This is the HKW-verse at its finest the shifters she creates are fascinating in their abilities, and the supporting characters possess their own spectacular qualities. Heather has done it again. This is one of my favorite of the 10 Kings’ books and I highly recommend it.
Brilliant new chapters to this amazing series!! I love all these new and established characters. And I love the nods to Your favorite characters..especially Jack Colton! Who is also one of my favorites! So very glad this series isn't over yet! What a wonderful journey you've taken us on so far! Sometimes things are not what they seem. You have a wonderful
imagination! Please keep writing and I will keep reading. From one of your biggest fans!

After reading all of HKW books I have to say this is one of my favorites. I don't want to give any spoilers so let me just say this book kept me on the edge of my seat turning pages till I finished it. To anyone who is thinking of reading this series you will not be disappointed BUT this is a series you have to start from the beginning or you will miss out on a lot of important key elements. This series has been a wonderful journey and this book left me once again wondering, well now who is the traitor!! As always Heather finds a way to keep us guessing and wanting more! Absolutely love these books!! You will not be disappointed we have everything from vampires, werewolves, dragons, shifters of other nature, witches and so much more, buckle up for a wild ride!
Heather has done it again. She never fails to delight, entertain, frustrate, and thrill. All at the same time. Jack and Sam are my new favorite couple. I love that Heather always makes her male characters extremely ALPHA! And yet her female characters are just as strong. They hold their own in what is typically a male-dominated world. They are smart, witty, funny, sarcastic, and a breath of fresh air.
The Kings Series is one of the best supernatural series' out there. Here we are on book 10, and the story just keeps getting better. As soon as you think that you have figured out who is who, Heather throws you a curveball that knocks everything for a loop. Do yourself a favor, READ THESE BOOKS!!!
I miss the little ol'lady. Her character was a source of humor and delight. I wanted the author to fill this empty spot thru most of the book.
Great fantasy romance novels have larger than life characters, great plots and pull out strong emotions.
I also count 14 kings and plotting who is the traitor? Who may not really be dead?
Love that twist and mystery.
I wish that all the books were also in audible format too.
