Evelyn is the servant to her cruel stepmother and single stepsister. She meets a duke at a ball and falls in love. If that premise sounds vaguely familiar, it should, because it's the timeless tale of Cinderella, the adult version. This fairytale retelling is nothing short of brilliant! Evelyn's parents have passed away and her vile stepmother, Lady Cecilia Manson, immediately dislikes her kindhearted stepdaughter. Unlike the French children's story, Evelyn's stepsister, Lady Jane, is a little self-centered, but ultimately not only a very sweet person, but Evelyn's very best friend. Duke Julien, Lord of Langley has no options left- his eight-year-old twins, Philip and Pippa, have just scared off their third governess and there is no one else willing to fill the position. Due to his mother's urging, he should be searching for a wife and mother for his kids. From the moment she sees the duke att a ball, Evelyn is completely smitten, but extremely self-conscious. Why would someone like him want to marry her? Will she finally receive the family she craves and eternal freedom from her evil stepmother? I highly recommend this short story to anyone who enjoys fairytales with a slight twist, such as numerous novels written by Gail Carson Levine, Liz Braswell, and Elizabeth Lim. Warning: Regina James’ From Maid to Duchess contains some minor spelling errors, but that fact doesn't lessen your enjoyment of the first book of (hopefully?) many in an enthralling new series.

From Maid to Duchess A Fairytale Retelling Book 1 edition by Regina James Romance eBooks Reviews

From Maid to Duchess written by Regina James is a Romantic fiction book. It follows Lady Evelyn after the death of her mother, when Lady Cecilia (stepmother to Evelyn) enters her life. What makes her life worse is that her father dies too, leaving both Evelyn and Lady Cecilia in poverty. Just like the book Cinderella, the evil stepmother Lady Cecilia uses Lady Evelyn as a servant. Lady Evelyn life changes when she meets The Duke of Langley, Julien who wants to find a mother to his children who will be nothing more than a mother. Lady Evelyn moves into The Duke of Langley’s house, where she becomes a servant to the house. Marriage without love. But as the book progresses feelings between Evelyn, and Julien grow. Evelyn gets invited by Julien to be a guest at dinner, and then on a horseback race, and then expressing his true feelings to Evelyn. If you want to read a romantic book between a duke and a maid, with a surprise ending you should definitely give this book a read! It has quite a few twists making this book both a romantic, and exciting read!
If you're a hopeless romantic, or even if you're not, you will be after reading this sweet love story. It is a typical Cinderella story, but with an even more realistic twist and outcome. I actually increased my vocabulary after reading this book, because it has several English words that I am not familiar with, but one quick look in dictionary.com and I was continuing on my fairy tale journey. The English setting and the way the author describes the surroundings of the home is so refreshing and she makes you feel as though you are right there. It was such a sweet story, I ended up shedding a tear, as I could relate to some of the things the "servant girl" experienced while under the care of her stepmother. I was so happy that she found love, even through the obstacles that seemed to stand boldly in her pathway. The writing of this book has a few mistakes here and there, but nothing you can't overlook. Such as, at one point, the word, "her" is used, when it should have been "his". Just minimal mistakes. It doesn't interrupt the flow of the story, or the excitement of reading the story. In my opinion the book is meant for a young adult and up. The content is probably inappropriate for young children. All in all, it's a great love story.
Prince charming, Cinderella, evil stepmother and stepsisters. All are here in From Maid to Duchess A Fairytale Retelling albeit I am sure not in the way you remember them from your childhood. Evelyn plays the realistic Cinderella in this Victorian era piece. The story is just about as classic as you can get with the Cinderella archetype. However, the reason to read this is Regina James has captured the era and attitudes of the characters so well. It may seem like you are reading a subplot right out of Downton Abbey, but the character developments and the social justices paid out in such a righteous way makes for such a great, engrossing and perhaps even a lite read.
Yet still following along as Evelyn ascends back up to her station in life after uncontrollable circumstances knocked her out of it, is just a great.
I would say that From Maid to Duchess harkens back to the Brothers Grimm telling of the story, but many of the physical gory details of that telling are left out, in favor of more accurate to the times of mental and emotional mutilations.
Overall I have to give From Maid to Duchess A Fairytale Retelling due credit, in being well told, well thought out and well written. I encourage any and everyone to pick this book up, whether you are looking for a feel good read, an emotional uplifting, or even a historical piece I do recommend this reading.
